General information
Background: Founded in 1815 on the edge of the town centre, the over-subscribed school is also close to the A12 trunk road, making educational visits further afield easy. The 'well-equipped' school was much expanded in the 1960s when seven 'spacious' classrooms were added. The building also now includes a computer suite and a library. Four and a half acres of 'landscaped' grounds contain a tarmac playground, two adventure playgrounds, a swimming pool and an 'extensive' sports field. The curriculum is taught in a 'stimulating and well-balanced' environment. Children who show commitment can receive tuition in flute, brass and violin. A 'full range' of extra-curricular activities is offered. 'Exceptionally strong' links with the community involve residents of the Seckford Almshouses receiving regular visits from Year 6 pupils and sometimes attending events at the school. Local clergy often lead assemblies. The Friends of St Mary's is an 'active' organisation that runs social and fundraising events. 'The partnership between home and school is fundamental to our philosophy of education'.
