General information

Background: Burntwood School was opened as a new school in September 1986. The school building, dating from 1958, is an award winning design by London County Council architects. A landscaped site of 13 acres provides a campus style design together with adjoining sports field. Teaching is centred in two main blocks containing specialist areas for science laboratories, computer networks, design and technology workshops, the library, art rooms, dance areas, languages laboratories and classrooms. In languages a flexible learning centre permits simultaneous work in listening and ICT work at computers. The school has excellent provision for students to develop their information and communication technology skills. Separate buildings include a large hall and a drama hall, a staff room, a student refectory and a physical education building, which includes three gymnasia and swimming pool. In addition, the sixth form is housed in its own building. As a Science Specialist School, it provides an enrichment of the science and mathematics curriculum. The school offers a wide variety of enrichment activities including dance, drama, life-saving, swimming, gymnastics, athletics, football, badminton, science, computing, languages and technology clubs, choirs and the school orchestra. An extensive range of school journeys and field trips are also organised. The school aims to provide a calm, orderly environment in which students and staff can feel secure.
