General information

Background: Founded in 1594; good buildings on single site, built between 1913 and 2005; four new classrooms, third ICT room and eighth laboratory in 2002. Sizeable sports fields; new sports hall; new performing arts centre. Sporting representatives at county, regional and national level; many sports, including fencing. Wide range of extra-curricular activities: three drama productions annually, orchestra, choir; also jazz dance, aerobics and golf. Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme; Christian Union; European exchange programme; global trips including Namibia expedition; South Africa sporting tour. Winners of National Science Race competition. Supports many charities; active student council. Large sixth form, with broad curriculum, including Russian and Mandarin Chinese; British Council International School award (2006). Specialist performing arts college status. Over-subscribed, with more than 11 applications per place. Artsmark Gold (2004, 2006); Sportsmark; DfES achievement award; training school status (2000). Ethos: 'The school sets out to provide a relaxed and constructive atmosphere in which pupils are encouraged to develop their individual talents. People are regarded as of equal value, yet each is seen as unique. Students are expected to question, contribute, challenge, be challenged - and work hard. Competition is seen as a valuable spur to growth, but only in a context of awareness of others and care for their needs.' .
