General information

Background: Founded by Olive Hands in 1903; became a high school in 1949 and moved to present greenfield site in 1964; since then, new language, design and technology, music, classroom and sixth-form blocks built. Facilities include hard tennis courts and two conservation areas, in addition to usual playing fields. Serves Rugby and the surrounding villages. Successes in sport, debating, music and poetry, Young Enterprise and Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Girls have been involved in designing a garden for old people, developing literature for farmers and the fire service; have also produced a teaching aid for blind children and regularly work with business in complex engineering projects. Girls achieve scholarships into the RAF and army, take part in European Parliament debates and also visit the European Parliament. Specialist science college status. Over-subscribed, with five applications per place. Eco-schools Award. Artsmark; Sportsmark. Ethos: 'The school has a family atmosphere where able girls are encouraged to aim high, take responsibility for their studies and actions and work towards achieving their full potential. Students are encouraged to use their talents for the benefit of others. Praise and rewards are used to help build self-esteem and confidence.
