General information

Background: Founded in 1890 by John Wordsworth, Bishop of Salisbury, the school became voluntary aided in 1999 after five years as a grant-maintained school. The church plays important part in school life; monthly cathedral services and Church of England chaplain. Most school buildings are on-site in the northeast corner of Cathedral Close, including a 16th-century manor house, late-Victorian chapel block and modern buildings housing laboratories, classrooms, music school and integrated resources suite. A rebuilding programme began in 2002 and a new humanities teaching block was completed at Easter 2003, including a drama studio and ICT facilities. There was also a complete refurbishment of science laboratories in 2003; new sports hall, art studios and third ICT suite. New design technology facilities in 2006. Close collaboration with sister school, South Wilts Grammar School for Girls, has led to joint teaching of 15 A-levels and AS-levels. Specialist language college status from September 2004. After-school care, until 5pm. Over-subscribed, with nearly three applications per place. International Schools Award (2006); Investor in People status (2004); DfES achievement award (2002, 2003). Ethos: 'Based firmly on Christian values within a grammar school tradition. Strong emphasis on taking personal responsibility and developing leadership and teamwork skills throughout. High academic expectations and standards in all aspects of school life.
