General information

Background: Hardenhuish School has occupied its present site since 1935; located on outskirts of Chippenham; campus is home to the original 18th-century walled garden in a meadow dating back to medieval times. In 1975 Chippenham Grammar and Chippenham Girls' High Schools merged onto this site; became grant-maintained in 1994 and acquired foundation status in 1999. Sale of land at eastern edge for housing, involving demolition of 1930s English and science building; state-of-the-art technology centre, new English and performing arts centre, and new sports hall, with climbing wall; major refurbishment of other buildings, with science in one building; improved facilities for mathematics and sixth form. Strengths include pastoral and academic support and also self-evaluation. The school has Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme; Specialist Mathematics and Computing College Status; Healthy School Award (2005); Schools Curriculum Award (2000); Sportsmark (2002); Investor in People Status (2005). 'Community ethos; purposeful, relaxed, friendly and welcoming.' Sixth form admissions policy:The year 12 admission number for external applicants is 30.Students will be admitted to the sixth form based on their ability to follow either a program of AS of vocational A level subjects. Entry into the sixth form is not dependent on a student?s previous pattern of attendance of behaviour. For As level courses there is a minimum requirement of GCSE grades A*-B in the subjects that they wish to study and, grades A*-C in three other subjects at GCSE. For vocational courses there is a minimum requirement of 5 GCSE passes at grade A*-C, one of which must be English and at least one, grade B or above.Over-subscription criteria year 12:1. The student has a brother or sister attending at the time of admission.2. Children resident in the villages and rural areas previously designated to Hardenhuish School, to include Christian Malford, Draycot Cerne, East Tytherton, Kington Langley, Lacock, Langley Burrell without, Marshfield, Sutton Benger and part of Seagry and Bremhill (as defined on the O.S. map held in school), and those resident in the Parish of Biddestone or attending a primary school serving these communities.3. The student resides in Chippenham.4. Other students who live within three miles of the school but not within the areas designated by categories 2 and 3.5. In the event of a tie with regard to the above criteria, the panel will make its decision based on the shortest distance, measured as the crow flies between the student?s home and Hardenhuish School House. Priority will be given to students who have Hardenhuish as their first preference school.
