General information
Background: A small, friendly village school set a thriving village in north west Worcestershire. The school occupies its original Victorian building which has been sympathetically extended to provide bright and airy classrooms. A new portacabin has created extra space. Outside the school an ancient oak tree, which has been adopted as the school's symbol, stands between two tarmac play areas. A separate play area is reserved for the youngest pupils. There is a purpose-built adventure playground and a full-sized sports field used for football, uni-hoc and cricket coaching, while the pond, willowdome, garden and polytunnel are used under supervision. The school benefits from a Trust which funds many projects not met by the LEA and small class sizes enable the school to help children reach their full potential. In addition to the National Curriculum, the school prides itself on 'innovative and exciting' projects such as a production of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat which won an Education Extra Award in 2000 and an African Arts Week organised with other village schools in the area in 2001. Volleyball, short tennis, French, drama, music, arts and crafts, netball, uni-hoc, cricket and football are among the many extra-curricular activities on offer. All sporting teams have enjoyed success in their leagues. In addition to good links with the community, pupils hold fundraising events to sponsor a Ghanaian schoolgirl and support charities such as the Stroke Association and the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust. 'Abberley Primary is above all a happy school. Visitors often comment on the warm, industrious atmosphere that greets them.' .
